Employment With The MFB As A Professional Firefighter
Employment With The MFB As A Firefighter – Metropolitan Fire Brigade ( written 10 June 2014 )
Employment with the MFB Victoria is a very competitive pursuit but certainly attainable with the right guidance attitude and ability.
The MFB usually recruits on average once a year for around 20 positions, this can vary from time to time depending on political climate and operational needs of the fire service.
Employment with the MFB kicks off with a 16 week training course conducted at the MFB Training and Fire Safety Complex where you will start as a recruit firefighter.
Firefighters then undertake a further 3 year continuation study programme similar to an apprenticeship. This continuation is conducted in conjunction with duties at your appointed fire station. Firefighters are required to respond to emergency calls as well as play their role on station and complete station duties. On successful completion of the continuation training programme you would be appointed the rank of Qualified Firefighter. You can choose to do further study and progress through the ranks of leading firefighter, station officer & senior station officer and higher but that will probably do for now.
If you are aiming at becoming a firefighter with the MFB make sure you have the latest up to date information and guidance when doing so and as always don’t go in half hearted as I can guarantee you will be disappointed you wasted your time.
Employment with the MFB is in my opinion a worthwhile pursuit and one that can provide you with a long term fulfilling career which can be hard to find these days. The role of a firefighter within the MFB offers so many opportunities including specialist roles i.e. rope rescue, fire investigation, RAR & specialist fire appliance operator just to name a few.
I wish you the best if you decide to take this path and will be here to help if you need.
