I thought I would give you guys a summary of the OFAT (One factor at a time) that a lot of you can easily refer to while preparing or waiting for your turn during the actual physical exam.
QFES OFAT – STEP-BY-STEP Guide
In the following guide I give you an extremely easy to follow outline of the now “QFD OFAT Test”. Here is a resources for more information on all the other tests to become a firefighter in QLD.
00:00 The QFES OFAT exam evaluates applicants’ physical compatibility for firefighting, allowing up to two attempts and requiring a medical certificate and indemnity certificate beforehand.
01:13 Proper attire, including long sleeves, long pants, and protective gear, is essential for the OFAT test, with strict prohibitions on shorts, jewelry, and open shoes to avoid automatic failure.
02:26 Only one warning is given during the OFAT test, and failing any stage results in automatic failure, but candidates may have a chance to retake the test on the same day or a scheduled date.
03:50 To pass the firefighter OFAT test, achieve a fitness level of 8.6, complete a claustrophobia test, and perform a stair climb with 20kg weighted vest in full PPE with a 15-kilogram weight.
05:42 Proper technique and control are crucial for tasks like dragging a hose and performing forcible entry with a sledgehammer during firefighter training.
06:53 Practicing lifting an 85-kilogram mannequin is crucial for firefighters to ensure they can safely rescue victims or colleagues in emergencies.
08:10 Firefighters demonstrate ladder placement and hose dragging techniques for effective incident response. Expand
09:58 Successfully completing the QFES firefighter OFAT test requires holding a nine-kilo equipment at three positions for twenty seconds each, simulating the use of hydraulic tools in a crash rescue scenario.
It has been a busy scene in the fire service industry as of late with almost simultaneous recruitments happening from different states. One of the most anticipated intakes perhaps is the one with Queensland Fire and Emergency Services or QFES especially with their revamped Aptitude and Physical exams!
QFES OFAT UPDATE
QFES has done a great job of updating their website and providing all the information there is on the 2-fold Aptitude Exam and the OFAT.
A lot of aspiring applicants ask what the best preparation is for OFAT. The answer is simple – an early start. Firefighter fitness is not something you achieve overnight but you can take specific actions to shorten the preparation timeframe.
If you plan to apply with any fire service, you should be at least somewhat physically fit already so you’ll have less to worry about when the time for the physical exam comes.
The next big secret to success for the physical exam is to PAY ATTENTION. Being physically fit means nothing if you don’t know how to follow instructions.
Good luck to all QFES aspirants who are scheduled to take their OFAT soon. For more information on the lineup of activities, QFES has this intake, be sure to visit their website or click here.
Cheers,
Brent
