Update for fire service recruitment in Australia and New Zealand
Hi guys! Brent here with a firefighter recruitment 2025 update for you. This recruitment update is a variable one as I’m writing this on the first day of the year and things always evolve in the recruitment space thus I’ll update this post accordingly as time progresses.
It’s been a while since my last update and I am happy to announce that it looks like fire service recruitment is more active than ever this year especially with the major services ramping up. Hopefully, we’ll see stable roll outs of recruitment dates in the months ahead.
QFD Firefighter Recruitment QLD – 2025
News
Following last year, QFES changed their name to QFD. Be sure to use the right name when completing your resume and preparing for interviews.

FRV is looking to stick with the same process and Pearson VUE as their testing provider
FRV Recruitment Dates & Outlook
FRV recruited last from 1st to 8th in JUL 2024.
It is rumored that this July – August 2025, the second batch of 700 applicants will proceed for group assessment. It is most likely roll they will roll-out for a new batch later in the year instead.
WST – the competition is fierce and everyone is being more prepared now. It just makes more sense to double our efforts and make sure we are truly equipped with the right knowledge for the assessment. NSW Fire and Rescue firefighter recruitment
News
Revelian has been bought out and rebranded to Criteria late 2021. They have since switched to the Criteria style of exam officially in 2023. This means, anyone preparing for application moving forward will have to practice using this format.

Fire and Rescue NSW will be using Criteria.
I have prepared Criteria practice test as well as some information around the Work Safety, Work Reliability and Emotify test.
Plan your course of action wisely to make sure you get yourself in the best shape possible to deal with the competition. I believe the competition will be as fierce as ever in NSW this year.

DFES – WA Firefighter Recruitment 2025

DFES NEW applications are currently closed as I’m writing this 2025 update. Those who applied last year are still mid-way through the recruitment process.
Forecast Recruitment: Q4 2025/Q1 2026
I am happy to say that a lot of our members from the previous intake are reporting their success in the firefighter application journey which shows that the program is helpful to those who have yet to start theirs.

The last DFES firefighter recruitment campaign in October 2024 has concluded and we are looking at a possible second half of 2025 recruitment drive for DFES.
Air Services – ARFF Firefighter Recruitment 2025 Dates

ARFF recruited multiple times in 2024. Currentlty, ARFF is ongoing in select locations as well. This will remain to be the case at least for the near future.
Aptitude Test Provider At this stage, the ARFF recruitment process looks to be staying the same with SHL as the test provider.
Recruitment outlook 2025
ARFF is ending the year strong with multiple recruitment openings for various locations announced. As of today (26th of November 2024) Locations are as follows –NT – DarwinSA – AdelaideQLD – Whitsunday coast, Mackay, Hamilton Island and Gladstone
I’m encouraging everyone to send in their applications ASAP as there might be changes to the closing date. The fire service has scheduled four recruitment courses for 2025:

SAMFS recruitment 2025 dates

SAMFS recruited in April 2022 after a very long dry spell and has then maintained a consistent recruitment pace every year.
Aptitude Test Provider – SAMFS has switched to SHL as their testing provider. The SAMFS aptitude test consists of an online unsupervised exam run by SHL. There are two sections in the aptitude component: General Abilities (consist of deductive/numerical) and Mechanical Reasoning questions. Each person will get a different question set drawn from a question bank.
FRA offers practice materials for both the SHL Aptitude practice test and SHL Personality Exams within our membership training courses. Recruitment outlook 2025
SAMFS applications is rumored to open around the second half of 2025 at the earliest and early Q2 2026 at the latest. This gives you enough time to get prepared as long as you start soon

The 2022 SAMFS recruitment team was very quiet about their intake plans for the previous year and surprised everyone when they just rolled out back in April. I won’t be too shocked if they do the same thing this year. Better start preparing now.
ACT Fire and Rescue Recruitment 2025 Dates

ACTFR applications last happened Q1 of 2024. – see next recruitment below.
Aptitude Test Provider – ACT uses TestGorilla as their exam provider which was a pleasant surprise for applicants because of it’s applicant-friendly interface. We have created TestGorilla tests ready to use in Membership.
Recruitment Outlook
ACTFR are due to open applications around April – May of 2025. We have news that there will be 2 training colleges in 2026 making this years application a really good opportunity given there will be potentially twice as many people getting positions.Keep your eyes peeled for recruitment updates. NT Fire and Rescue last recruited in Q1 of 2024. They stuck to the same recruitment process as the previous years and the big hurdle that knocked out the majority was once again the aptitude test.
