There are many organisations that offer Revelian Practice tests. However, here at Fire Recruitment Australia, we have practice tests designed especially for the Australian fire services.

This means that if you use our practice tests, you’ll have the best chance of passing the real test when you take it. Remember, the more you practice, the better your chances of acing the written test.

What Is The Revelian Cognitive Ability Test?

The Revelian test is computer-based and involves answering 51 questions. It’s a timed test and you have 20 minutes to complete it. This is precisely why it’s really important to do some practice tests beforehand so that you’re well prepared for taking the test on the day.

Generally, tests are difficult enough and even harder when you don’t know beforehand what to expect. Most people feel stress when they go into a testing type situation anyway. You can lessen this stress by being well-prepared with a few practice tests under your belt.

What Does The Revelian Test Cover?

This cognitive ability test covers 3 main areas:

1. Verbal Reasoning

This tests your English language ability. It includes questions on vocabulary and sentence structure. This means that you should be able to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.

Questions could include verbal analogies like:

Hot is to cold, as day is to ______

You could also be asked questions that require you to identify missing words and you have to work out whether the word relationship example is a verb, a synonym or an adjective.

For example:

Temperature : decrease : colder | Weight: decrease : ???

Alternatively, this question could be made more difficult by flipping it and making it seem illogical as such:

Temperature : decrease : warmer | Weight : increase : ???

So, you can see from the above examples that you really do have to be well prepared for the actual test so that you understand exactly what to expect.

Verbal reasoning questions can also include a section for comprehension. For these types of questions, you have to read some information and then answer questions about the information you just read.

2. Numerical Reasoning

This tests your mathematical skills. It includes a variety of number matrices questions. This means that you’ll need good basic math skills.

Bear in mind that calculators will not be allowed during the test, so you’ll have to do all the calculations by hand. Therefore, if you’ve been out of school for a while, you definitely need to brush up on your skills.

Also, be prepared for number sequence type questions that ask you to choose the next number that follows the pattern. Here’s an example:

1, 2, 4, 8, 16, __

The question will ask you to insert the next number. Now, this one is quite easy because each number is double the last one. Therefore, the answer is 32. However, not all questions will be this easy and the number pattern may be more difficult to determine.

In fact, these types of questions can be quite complex, so practising them extensively is vitally important.

3. Abstract Reasoning

This tests your ability to apply solid reasoning to a number of different situations. It can include questions that ask you to identify objects that do not belong and also problem solving questions.

This is also sometimes referred to as non-verbal reasoning. Basically, what you have to do is determine the pattern in the example and then work out what comes next.

For example, you could be given a series of objects or shapes and you need to select which object or shape comes next in the sequence.

Here’s an example of an abstract reasoning question:

Why You Need To Study For This Test

Many people think that they don’t need to study for this written test, however, they would be wrong. Remember, you only have 20 minutes to complete all 51 questions and you should attempt to answer ALL the questions.

You need to get at least 70% on the test to pass. However, a simple pass may not be enough to get you accepted into the fire services. Therefore, the higher your score, the more likely you’ll be chosen to move on to the next stage.

The more you practice these test questions, the better you’ll get at answering them quickly and moving on to the next one.
